The 59-year-old was initially said to be one of Zamalek's main targets when the club were contemplating who to replace Juan Carlos Osorio with.
However, due to his Al Ahly affiliation, it is believed the former midfielder decided to decline the White Knights' proposal.
This has led the five-time CAF Champions League winners to continue their task of finding a suitable successor to the Colombian, and according to Yalla Kora, the Egyptian juggernauts have now come up with four names to decide from.
Former Turkey boss Stefan Kuntz headlines a shortlist that reportedly also includes Massimo Carrera, Jose Luis Sierra and Franco Foda.
All of the tacticians in question are without jobs, and Zamalek are considering appointing one of them, but their arrival is said to be premised on whether or not they will be able to work with the current squad.
The north African giants are also in the midst of a dispute with Portuguese outfit Sporting CP over an unpaid fine worth €1.5 million (R30.5 million), and should the Primeira Liga side want the payment in full, there will be little money available to improve the squad in the next window.
If Sporting decide to be paid in instalments, then a bigger budget will be allocated to the new head coach to get new players.

The same report claims that talks have already begun with the aforementioned candidates, but it is further claimed that new potential appointments could reportedly still make their way into contention too.
