The 29-year-old became the first South African footballer to claim the continental accolade at a ceremony in Morocco on Monday night.
Tau helped the Red Devils claim three trophies in 2023 – the Egyptian Premier League, the CAF Champions League and the Egyptian Super Cup titles – and has been in fine scoring form again this season.
Ex-Al Ahly winger Tarek El Said, who played for the club between 2006 and 2008 after representing Zamalek in the four years prior, believes the Bafana forward is crucial to Marcel Koller's side.
"Percy Tau's most important advantages are controlling the ball," he said on a TV show, according to Egypt Independent.
"He has speed with the ball, he has solutions and is able to penetrate from the sides, and he has begun to develop himself in the defensive aspects as well, and this point is very important for any coach in order to support the fullback.
"He also has good vision on the field, which is why he was influential with Al-Ahly last season. He is also co-operative with his teammates and does not resort to selfishness on the field."
