The West African giants have not had an ideal start to their FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, as the three-time continental champions are currently in fourth position in Group C, six points behind table-toppers Bafana Bafana.
During the most recent phase of qualification, a 2-0 victory over Rwanda — their first of the World Cup qualifiers — breathed new life into their aspirations to reach the global showpiece, but a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo has once again dented their hopes.
Despite being six points adrift of top spot, however, 44-capped Super Eagle John Utaka believes that his nation have what it takes to make it to the United States of America, Mexico and Canada.
“We must not give up. With the kind of talent we have, we shouldn’t be in this position. We need to come together and stay focused. We must be determined like other countries,” the former winger told Brila FM.
“In football, anything can happen. We shouldn’t give up. I still believe we can qualify, but it depends on how we approach the games ahead.”

The chance that Hugo Broos’ men could also be stripped of three points for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, during their recent qualifier against Lesotho, will also give Nigeria hope that they can make up the difference.
