Ex-Chiefs Star Goes Up Against Mosimane In Saudi Arabia

A former Kaizer Chiefs attacker will be going up against Pitso Mosimane's Abha Club this weekend in the Saudi Pro League, with the pair having last faced one another in South Africa's top division a decade ago.

During his two spells at Chiefs between 2009 and 2011, and between 2013 and 2014, former Zimbabwe captain Knowledge Musona's path would have crossed Mosimane's on a number of occasions. Their last encounter in a game dates back to 2014, when Musona played for the Glamour Boys in a 1-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the DStv Premiership.

Chiefs had won the league just six months prior to this meeting against Sundowns, who would eventually go on to lift the trophy for the first time under Mosimane later that same year. Musona returned to Europe, meanwhile, rejoining German side Hoffenheim following his loan spell back in South Africa, before beginning a six-year stint in Belgium with KV Oostende in 2015.

Today, the 33-year-old stars in Saudi Arabia for Al Riyadh, whom he joined from fellow Saudi side Al Tai in 2023. Musona has scored four goals across all competitions this season, and has captained his team for most of the campaign, which is perhaps a testimony to his vast experience and his standing within the group.

Al Riyadh are only three points in front of Mosimane's Abha Club, whom he has a deal with until the end of the campaign, with just two places separating them on the league table. Musona's side are 15th, while the South African's team, in 17th spot, are currently in a relegation battle.

The Zimbabwean and his former PSL colleague will meet on Saturday at 21:00 (SAT) at the Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Stadium in Riyadh.
