Despite Yanga claiming a domestic treble and Masandawana claiming the DStv Premiership and the African Football League titles, it was the Egyptian giants and African champions Ahly who won the Africa Men's Club of the Year award for 2023.
In the Men's Interclub Player of the Year category, it was a member of the Red Devils who scooped up the prize as Tau became the first-ever South African to win the accolade.
Speaking to the Sada El Balad channel after the ceremony held in Marrakech, Tariq Qandil, a member of Ahly's Board of Directors, expressed his happiness at receiving the award on behalf of the club, before lauding the man also known as the "Lion of Judah" and also revealing the words club president Mahmoud El Khatib shared with him about the victories.
"El Khatib contacted me after receiving the award for the best in the continent, and stressed his happiness with what was achieved, and Percy Tau proved that he is a great player, and that Al Ahly always adds to those who belong to him," Qandil said.
