With 2022 having recently drawn to a close, FIFA have released their annual report of the world's biggest spenders, and it is record African champions Al Ahly who trail a Premier Soccer League powerhouse on the continent.

World football's governing body has come out with their latest Global Transfer Report for 2022, and as it pertains to the Africa, it is clear which region on the continent holds the monetary power.
All but two of the sides that spent the most money in the CAF region hail from north Africa.
Egypt have the most teams in FIFA's top 10 of Africa's biggest spenders from last year, with Al Ahly, Pyramids, Zamalek, Ismaily and Future FC making up half of the list.
The Club of the Century suffered their worst league finish in 30 years at the end of last season, and in an attempt to remedy their domestic failure, Egypt's most successful side spent big in order to bring in Brazilian Bruno Savio.
As per Transfermarkt, the 10-time CAF Champions League winners bought Savio for €1.8 million (R33.6 million) and are now top of the Egyptian Premier League standings.
According to FIFA's report, they were the third largest spenders in Africa last year.
South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns led the way for Africa in 2022 as Masandawana continue to bring quality foreign talent to the country's shores, with the likes of Marcelo Allende and Abdelmounaim Boutouil making their way to the PSL.
Completing the top three, behind the reigning DSTV Premiership champions, are Tunisian powerhouse Esperance de Tunis.
Like Sundowns, Esperance are the only representatives on the list from their country and will be hoping their investments in 2022 pay dividends this year.
English Referee Flees African Country Amid Safety Concerns
While many of their acquisitions during the off-season were free transfers, the signings of both Mootez Zaddem and Riad Benayad cost the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 record champions a combined €900 000 (R16.8 million), as per Transfermakrt.
Esperance currently sit second behind ES Sahel in the log standings, but with much of the league campaignstill to play, they will be hoping they can add a 33rd league title to their name come the end of the season.
