Nigeria Boss Resigns Following AFCON Exit

Nigeria Boss Resigns Following AFCON Exit

Augustine Eguavoen has vacated his role as head coach of the Nigerian national team after his side crashed out of Africa Cup of Nations at the round of 16 stage on Sunday.

Following a seamless start to the tournament by the three-time champions as they defeated Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau, many touted the Super Eagles as favourites to win the competition.

However, they fell short of those expectations after getting beat by a COVID-19-stricken Tunisia 1-0 in the round of 16.

The defeat has seen Eguavoen's short-lived stint as Nigeria head coach come to an end after he took over from Gernot Rohr in an interim capacity in December 2021.

Eguavoen announced that he would be stepping back into the Nigeria Football Federation's (NFF) technical director position during a post-game press conference.

"I will go back to my position and allow the NFF (to) make a decision on the way forward."

Before the commencement of the competition, the NFF had announced that Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro would be the man to be Rohr's permanent replacement in the Nigerian dugout.
