Liverpool defender, Joel Matip, who has impressed under Jurgen Klopp this, has turned down the chance to represent Cameroon at the AFCON.
Matip has not played for the Indomitable Lions since 2015, but ESPN report that the team have been in talks with the player about featuring in the tournament, which Klopps confirms he has turned down.
"We had this talk a few weeks ago," Klopp told reporters at his press conference.
"I was not surprised anymore. Of course, I'm happy about this -- that's no doubt.
"Players have to make these decisions by themselves, it's nothing that the clubs can do.
"For Joel, it's different because he has grown up in Germany and stuff. That's always different of course and I've had a few players like this. He decided this for himself and good for us."
