Africa Cup of Nations Wrap

Morocco 2-1 Malawi

Gabadinho Mhango's stunning strike was not enough to send Malawi to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after losing 2-1 to Morocco on Tuesday night.

The Malawians got off to the perfect start after Gabadinho Mhango bagged his third goal of the tournament in the seventh minute with a wonderful strike that left Bounou with no chance.

Morocco looked to pull themselves level soon after when Imran Louza was left un-marked in the box, but goalkeeper Charles Thomu was on hand to make the save.

Mhango was presented with a chance to double the lead on 23 minutes after latching onto a impressive pass from Micium Mhone, but the Orlando Pirates man dragged his effort wide of the mark.

Romain Saïss went even closer for the Atlas Lions in the 34th minute when his first-time flick from a free-kick crashed against the crossbar with Thomu well beaten.

Morocco got their reward on the stroke of halftime when Youssef En-Nesyri rose above his marker to head home a cross from Selim Amallah for his second goal of the tournament.

The Flames responded with a double change at the break as Richard Mbulu and Gerald Phiri Junior were introduced, and the former had a chance to put his side on the hour mark but he failed to connect with an inviting cross in the six-yard area.

However, Morocco completed the turnaround with 20 minutes left in sensational style as full-back Achraf Hakimi scored his second free-kick of the tournament with an unstoppable strike from around 30-yards.

The Atlas Lions were able to see out the remaining stages of the second half without any real threat from the Flames as they secured a spot in the quarter-finals.

Senegal 2-0 Cape Verde

Senegal secured passage to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after defeating nine-man Cape Verde 2-0 on Tuesday evening.

This was only the fifth meeting between the two nations, with the Lions of Teranga winning all four previous encounters without conceding a single goal.

While Senegal dominated early on, the Blue Sharks suffered a in the 21st minute when Patrick Andrade's yellow card was upgraded to a red after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check.

Senegal should have taken advantage of their dominance with six minutes left in the half when Diedhiou set up in Pape Gueye in the box, but the latter fired his effort over the crossbar.

Things got worse Cape Verde after the break when goalkeeper Vozinha was forced off after clash of heads with Sadio Mane, although after a VAR check the referee deemed the shot-stopper to have fouled Mane and was shown a straight red.

With the Blue Sharks down to nine, Rodrigues was sacrificed in order to bring on second choice goalkeeper Márcio Rosa who was called into action immediately to deny Mane on 62 minutes.

However, Senegal broke the deadlock from the resultant corner courtesy of a superb strike from Mane who took one touch before firing into the top corner.

That was Mane's last major involvement as he taken off after seemingly not fully recovered from the clash of heads with Vozinha a few minutes earlier.

Cape Verde, meanwhile, struggled to find any opening in the latter stages of the second half, but the 2019 finalists went on to bag a second goal through Bamba Nieng after a swift counter-attack in stoppage time to seal a spot in the last eight.
