What makes South African football special are the nicknames that the fans and media dub on the players in the league, but which ones were the best?
Over the years, some colourful nicknames have emerged and they have often stuck… Here are some of the best from past players…
Steve 'Kalamazoo' Mokone – This nickname was inherited after the hit song, 'I've got a girl in Kalamazoo'.
Amos 'Heel Extension' Mkhari– This became famous for his use of back-heel corners.
Ephraim 'The Black Prince' Sono– Known for more than one nickname, which saw Jomo become his inherited first name thanks to the first president of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, he was labeled the Black Prince during his participation in the Black Consciousness movement.
Other nicknames include 'Troublemaker', 'Mjomana' and 'BraJ'.
Andrew 'Jesus Christ' Karajinsky – with flowing black hair accompanied with a thick beard, Karajinksy was handed this nickname due to his presence in the Pirates midfield and his similarities to Jesus.
Jabu 'Shuffle the Pack' Mahlangu– Previously known as Jabu Pule, the trickster's name came from his famous Shuffle move he pulled off on the field. He was also known as 'Ngwana wa Tswenya' as well as 'Lost and Found'.
Kaizer 'Chincha Guluva' Motaung– The Chiefs legend earned his nickname due to his skills on the park. Chincha Guluva is roughly translated to 'dribbling wizard'.
Linda 'Mercedez Benz' Buthelezi– Buthelezi's nickname came via South Africa's Big Dog, Clive Barker… This was due to him being a hard-man on the field, which compared to stability and safety of a Merc.
Vusi 'Computer' Lamola– This was due to Lamola's brain and feet being programmed to being quick thinking and fast – just like a computer…
