Next week, the South African Hall of Fame, an NGO dedicated to celebrating national heroes, will welcome several local football legends into its prestigious club.
Jomo Sono, Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba, Pule "Ace" Ntsoelengoe, Nelson "Teenage" Dladla, and Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis are set to be inducted into the South African Hall of Fame this month.
1996 Africa Cup of Nations-winning heroes Lucas Radebe and Neil Tovey, who captained the Clive Barker-coached side, will also be honoured.
The announcement was made by the SA Hall of Fame and the South African Football Association (SAFA), with the former planning to announce the new football inductees in different stages, seeing Tovey, Radebe and coach Ellis being mentioned in part one on their social media pages.
In a SAFA press release, Dr. Ellis expressed her humility at receiving the honour, extending her gratitude to SAFA, her players, support staff, Sasol, and others who have played a part in her playing and coaching journey with Banyana Banyana.
"I am truly humbled and blessed. A big thank you to the South African Hall of Fame for the induction. A big thank you to the South African Football Association (SAFA) and Sasol for the unwavering support.
"I have to also say a very big thank you to the Banyana Banyana players and the staff, because we always speak about teamwork, and we always say that individuals will get recognition, and I'm just blessed that I'm one of those individuals," said the 2022 WAFCON-winning coach.
