The story

Amakhosi have explored a new way to help their players recover and rehabilitate, using a wellness treatment called cryotherapy.

The players visited the Wellness Lab in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, to undergo some cryotherapy and expose their bodies to sub-zero temperatures in a cryochamber.

Cryotherapy is when your body is exposed to extreme cold that can freeze and destroy abnormal tissue. According to myclevelandclinic.org, liquid nitrogen and argon gas can be used to create the severe cold temperature in cryochambers.

Cryotherapy can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions and some cancers, including prostate and liver cancer. This therapy can treat tissue externally and internally," read an article from the aforementioned medical publication.

The most popular form of cryotherapy involves sitting in a cryochamber for no longer than three to five minutes, as per Medical News Today (MNT).

As pointed out by MNT, preliminary studies on cryotherapy suggest that it offers benefits such as, Pain relief and muscle healing; Weight loss; Reduced inflammation; and Migraine headache reprieve among others.

"This type of treatment is very important, like you know, you always do your massages and ice baths, but this type of recovery is really good for the body," said new Chiefs defender, Rushwin Dortley on his experience with cryotherapy, adding: "This recovery is very good for athletes."
