The story

Wydad Casablanca boss, Rulani Mokwena is taking an indefinite break from social media to focus on his mental wellbeing, rejuvenating his spirit and the end-of-season run-in.

The 37-year-old tactician, who is one of the more active South African coaches online, much like veterans Gavin Hunt and his former mentor Pitso Mosimane, announced his decision to step away from socials with a lengthy statement.

"In the coming weeks, I will be stepping away from social media to embark on a period of digital detox and rejuvenation but will also allow me to focus wholeheartedly on the final part of my current endeavors," read Rulani's letter, shared on his IG story.

"Disconnecting from the digital world, even briefly, can offer profound benefits to one's mental clarity and emotional wellbeing, fostering a deeper connection with oneself and the world around us.

"Please know that this decision comes from a place of gratitude and humility. I am incredibly thankful for all the love, support and positive energy that you have continuously extended towards me. Your encouragement has been a source of strength, and I carry it with me as I undertake this journey towards greater mindfulness and focus," noted Rulani.

This social media break could serve as an ideal way for the former Mamelodi Sundowns boss to block out the unnecessary noise as his third-placed Wydad aim to finish the season on a high and qualify for the next season's CAF competitions.

Rulani's side currently find themselves in third place on the Botola Pro 1 standings, 17 points behind league-leaders RS Berkane. Wydad losing grip on the title chase placed extra pressure on him.

Last month, the ex-Orlando Pirates coach complained about the behaviour of fans whenever Wydad would drop points, with fans also criticising him online for the team's performances.

"Though I will temporarily be unable to engage with you online, please understand that my appreciation for your support remains boundless. I look forward to reconnecting soon, refreshed and re-energised, ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities," added Rulani.

Rulani currently has over 470 000 followers on Instagram and for now, his Twitter/X account seems to be deactivated.
