Bafana Bafana's all-time top goalscorer looks all but set to take the reins with the Harambee Stars after weeks of conjecture.
After leaving his coaching position at Manchester United at the start of the 2024/25 season, many wondered where the Cape Town native would land, but now he looks to be on the verge of leading one of the three 2027 Africa Cup of Nations hosts.
Having been a head coach first at Cape Town City, then at AmaZulu, the ex-striker's next position was an assistant role at United. He spent two seasons at Old Trafford working under Erik ten Hag before the Red Devils decided against renewing his contract.
Now, McCarthy will be returning to a head coaching role with Kenya, and a senior member of the nation's football association has lofty expectations of the 2004 UEFA Champions League winner.
"We have a new coach, Benni McCarthy, who will be taking over the team and is expected to arrive in the country before the end of the week. He is a qualified coach who we believe can help steer the national team to prosperity," said the official who chose to be anonymous, as per Nation Sports.
"Our aim is to build a good team that will take Kenya back to the glory days, and everything will be done based on merit, including selection to the national team.
