Before becoming a successful manager in Europe, the Portuguese tactician was a professional footballer. Although he didn't have a superstar career, the Lisbo native played in Liga Portugal for over a decade.
He spent most of his career playing for Portugal's most successful club, Benfica, making 153 appearances for the Eagles in all competitions.
In 2010, his performances for Os Encarnados did not go unnoticed by former Bafana Bafana head coach Carlos Queiroz, as after star winger Nani was unable to make it to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Amorim was selected as his replacement.
He subsequently made his debut for A Selecao at world football's biggest tournament, and when asked what he remembers of that momentous occasion in his career, Amorim said while speaking to SuperSport: "It was an amazing experience, it was a very good World Cup.
"I remember that I was called during the preparation because Nani had an injury, and I was called. Then I arrived there, I trained for one week, and I played 10 minutes in the first game against Ivory Coast.
"I remember the sound of vuvuzelas. It was amazing but also hard sometimes to speak in the stadium, but you guys have a very beautiful country.
