Five Ex-Pirates Coaches Shining In Africa

With Josef Zinnbauer recently being appointed head coach of a major North African side, we take a look at five former Orlando Pirates coaches who are now spread across the continent.

Following a brief stint in the Saudi Pro League, the German tactician has officially returned to Africa after being announced as the new head coach of Algeria's most successful side, JS Kabylie.

The 54-year-old first experienced football within the CAF region when he took charge of the Sea Robbers in 2021. However, he likely achieved his greatest success in Africa when he led Raja Club Athletic to a historic unbeaten league and cup double last campaign.

Now, Zinnbauer will aim to achieve similar results in the Ligue Professionnelle 1 with the Canaries. The Botola Pro Inwi, however, is not without another former Pirates boss, as Rulani Mokwena is now in the Moroccan top flight with Raja's great rivals, Wydad Athletic Club.

The Johannesburg native took the top job at the Red Castle at the start of the 2024/25 campaign and is currently working to help Morocco's record champions return to continental competition after they missed out on interclub tournaments for the first time in a decade this season.

Below is a list of former Orlando Pirates coaches to now be coaching other major club's on the African continent:

milutin sredojevic

rulani mokwena
Rulani Mokwena - Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco)
fadlu davids
Fadlu Davids - Simba SC (Tanzania)
josef zinnbauer
Josef Zinnbauer - JS Kabylie (Algeria)
muhsin Ertugral

Much of Mokwena's time with the 1995 CAF Champions League winners was spent as an assistant under Serbian Milutin Sredojevic. The Prokuplje native is also continuing to expose himself to different environments on the continent, as he was recently appointed head coach of Sudanese juggernauts Al-Merrikh.

Sredojevic began his African coaching journey in Uganda in 2001 and, along the way, has coached the Buccaneers on two separate occasions. His experience extends beyond clubs, having also managed the Ugandan, Zambian, and Libyan national teams.

Working under him at Orlando Stadium was Fadlu Davids. He perhaps spent the majority of his time as an assistant manager with the South African giants under Zinnbauer. Now, the Capetonian has stepped out of the shadows of understudy to become one of the fastest-rising coaches in Africa.

Davids is currently the boss of Simba SC and has them at the top of the Tanzanian Premier League, just six months into his first-ever head coaching position.

One coach who is not far from his former side is Muhsin Ertugral. The Turk spent only a short stint with the Soweto-based outfit, managing just nine matches. However, following a six-year absence from the dugout, he recently returned to coach Cape Town City in the Betway Premiership.
