SA Coach Opens Up On AFCON: 'It's Only The Beginning'

SA Coach Opens Up On AFCON: 'It's Only The Beginning'

Morena Ramoreboli is not the type of coach who gets comfortable in a position. If he were, then he most certainly won't be where he is today.

The hard work he puts into making sure he constantly improves as a coach has led him to securing the big job as head coach of the Botswana national team, in the same year they will be returning to the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2012.

This is no regular job. It's a big one and it's going to come with huge responsibility because of the expectations that have been placed on his shoulders.

Ramoreboli, the former Jwaneng Galaxy coach, has signed a two-year deal with the Botswana national team and has been tasked to lead the country to the knockout stages of AFCON, which has never happened before. He also has the responsibility to collect at least 12 points in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and to win the COSAFA Cup later this year.

It's a tough ask, but Ramoreboli has never been scared of a challenge.

"This has been a long journey, but to be honest with you, it has been a journey full of lessons and most importantly, the knowledge that one gains through the journey has brought this national team job. It has never been easy, but I am very happy and proud of myself as a coach. I think I have done enough to be where I am," Ramoreboli said to the Siya crew.

"This is not the end of the journey. It's only the beginning. We really need to put more effort into achieving greater things. There's going to be a lot of pressure and a lot of expectations, but we need to deliver despite the challenges and expectations. We will do our best to make sure we achieve greater things. I always say that when you are given an opportunity, do your best, work as hard as you can to make sure that you leave a mark. This is another opportunity for me to leave a mark. It's another opportunity to do my best and represent Botswana with pride."

"Honestly speaking, this is a great opportunity for me to grow, looking at the fact that coaching in the Africa Cup of Nations is a possibility that one can achieve. So, we will do our best to achieve. I just pray that I get the same support from the country and from the association and from the players because those are the most important people in this project. They need to understand the importance of working hard and achieving. They need to continue fighting and adding to what they have already done."

It's going to be a big year for Ramoreboli who has the potential to grow his name on the African continent.
