Mokotjo On Big Three: 'What I Could Control'

Mokotjo On Big Three: 'What I Could Control'

Kamohelo Mokotjo has commented on why he did not end up at one of the so-called 'Big Three' on his return from overseas unlike many players who did so.

The experienced midfielder, who is an integral member of Cape Town City's squad in the quest for an improved season, compared to the previous one, aims to build on his performances from a successful stint with Sekhukhune United.

The 33-year-old played a big part in helping Babina Noko to finish fourth in the league last season, adding to the achievement of the previous campaign where the team played in the Nedbank Cup final and qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Having spent 14 years in Europe where he played for the likes of Feyenoord, FC Twente, PEC Zwolle and Brentford, Mokotjo returned home to join Sekhukhune in January 2023 and went on to make 50 appearances for the ambitious side.

Over the years, it has been a norm for many big-name players to be lured to the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns when they came back from Europe, but for Mokotjo it was all about his happiness and the willingness to contribute to the success of the rapidly growing brand of Sekhukhune, and it paid off judging by what was achieved.

"I don't want to dwell on things like that, but everyone has their own opinion over a certain player. It's not for a player to say, 'I want to go there, or I don't want to go there.'

"The thing with me is that I had been out for a while back then and I just wanted to play football, and I knew it didn't matter where. It's not going to make any difference because I'll still perform," said Mokotjo, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.

"The good thing is I ended up at a club where I could serve them well and the rest is history. There is nothing I can say about other teams and about opinions. What I could control was how I perform and what I do on the pitch and that's me and the person that I have always been. I've never wanted things to be given to me on a silver platter and that won't change, probably until the day I stop," he said.
