The story
Speaking after Stellenbosch FC's narrow win over AmaZulu in the opening match of this season's Carling Knockout Cup, Steve Barker showed why his man-management skills are up there with the best.
The Cape Winelands side overcame Usuthu in a 2-1 win after extra-time in their round of 16 clash in Umlazi, Durban, getting their title defence off to a good start.
Barker opted to bench Jayden Adams for the clash, which comes after the 23-year-old midfielder was dropped by Bafana Bafana head coach, Hugo Broos for disciplinary reason.
Adams replaced Ashley Cupido in the 69th minute and delivered a composed performance in midfield, continuing from where he left off in the MTN8 final.
Barker was left encouraged by Adams' showing and has now doubt that the player will recover from his national team setback. "I think Jayden, obviously, is a very very talented footballer," noted the Stellies coach.
"At the end of the window, there was plenty of talk of him making a move, it didn't happen. And the Bafana camp, not being selected. It's not an easy period for him but he's a quality footballer and he just needs to get back to enjoying playing and doing what he's capable of doing," added Barker.
