The last Brazilian to win the illustrious Golden Ball award was Kaka in 2007. He was also the last player to hold the gong aloft before Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo established a duopoly for the prize until Luka Modric broke it in 2018.
Neymar tried to break the hegemony the two icons had created, finishing third in the voting for the award in 2015 and 2017, but he still has not been able to get his hands on the famous prize.
However, it now appears likely that another member of the Selecao will finally get to win the Ballon d'Or, with Vinicius Junior now believed to be the favourite for the grand trophy following his exploits this past season.
The 23-year-old scored 24 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions in the past campaign, and also scored the second goal in Real Madrid's 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League final.

It is because of these performances for Los Blancos that his international teammate Neymar believes the skilful winger is deserving of the Ballon d'Or.
"As for Vini, obviously I think the Ballon d'Or is his today," Neymar said, as per ESPN.
"I sent [him] messages before and after the [Champions League final] game. He's a boy I love with passion, a great friend that football gave me. He will certainly be crowned with the Ballon d'Or.
