Manchester United's stuttering form in the Premier League continued after losing 2-1 to Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.
Premier League
Result: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Manchester United
Date: 30 December 2023
Venue: City Ground
The Red Devils made just one change from the win over Aston Villa as Rasmus Hojlund misses out through illness and is replaced by Antony.
Erik ten Hag's charges dominated possession for most of the early parts of the first half, but they were finding it tough to break down the Forest defence.
Other than a couple long-range efforts from Chris Woods, the first half was quite a slow affair from both sides, especially from the Red Devils who did not have one clear scoring chance in the first half.
The Red Devils faced off against Forest on four occasion last season and were able to win both encounters (league and Cup) at the City ground.
Ten Hag made a couple changes early in the second half, as Scott McTominay replaced Kobbie Mainoo while Antony made way for Amad Diallo, who was making his first appearance of the season.
United went agonisingly close on 55 minutes when Diogo Dalot got on the end of Aaron Wan-Bissaka's low cross and unleashed a powerful strike that hit the woodwork.
The deadlock was broken in the 64th minute as the host opened the scoring through Nikolas Dominguez, who sent neat finish into the bottom corner after getting on the end of Gonzalo Montiel's cross.
United did get back on level terms in the 77th minute when Alejandro Garnacho intercepted a pass from goalkeeper Matt Turner before teeing up Rashford, who calmly slotted into the bottom corner.
The visitors' joy did not last long as Forest restored their lead in the 82nd minute courtesy of another lovely finish from Morgan Gibbs-White on the edge of the box.
