Bongani Khumalo Tipped For AmaZulu

Bongani Khumalo Tipped For AmaZulu

AmaZulu FC have embarked on a rebuilding phase after finishing outside the top eight in the DStv Premiership last season.

The team has announced that they will release 11 players, as well as their head coach and other officials.

They recently advertised positions which they need to fill and one of those positions is of Sporting Director. Now, Siya sources have indicated that former SuperSport United and Bafana Bafana defender, Bongani Khumalo is tipped for that position.

"It seems for the General Manager or team manager there is another person for that. It seems Luyanda Papu is a leading candidate for one of those two positions. The Sporting Director is the one that the club is looking at for Bongani Khumalo," said the Siya source.

"The thing is he hasn't just played football at the highest level, he is also qualified. They can't just bring in any person like that. They know he is good for that position and he can help the team going forward.

"There are things they have considered before looking at him to take up that position. Apparently, he has what it takes and he has the presence as well. That's what the club needs.

"So, it seems him and Luyanda (Papu) are in the forefront for these vacant positions for now," the source said.

The 36-year-old Eswatini born Khumalo retired from active professional football in September 2021 while playing for BidVest Wits. In his career, he has played for teams like University of Pretoria before joining SuperSport United and then Tottenham Hotspur in England.

During his time at SuperSport United, he became the youngest captain to lift a league title at 23-years-old and went on to win three league titles in a row.

He scored one of the goals in a 2-1 win over France at the 2010 Fifa World Cup hosted by South Africa. Contacted for comment, AmaZulu Media Officer Brilliant Nhlanhla Mkhathini could neither confirm nor deny the news as he said the matter was being handled by the HR department.

"At the moment that issue is in the hands of the HR and in the coming weeks they will come up with those people who they will have appointed or shortlisted according to what they need from those who applied and I can't say if Bongani Khumalo is one of them because it's the HR that knows and they are following their process," Mkhathini responded.
