Manenzhe Chooses His Player Of The Season

Manenzhe Chooses His Player Of The Season

Former Orlando Pirates striker turned TV pundit Phumudzo Manenzhe has weighed in on who he thinks should win the PSL Player of the Season award.

Both Rulani Mokwena and Gavin Hunt have tipped Teboho Mokoena to walk away with the award, following his exploits for eventual league champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mokoena has been scintillating for the Brazilians following his switch from SuperSport United two seasons ago.

However, Manenzhe, who spoke to the Siya crew at the Marriot Bonvoy hotel in Melrose Arch, is of the opinion that Mokoena has only won one PSL competition and that the Player of the Season award should in fact go to Orlando Pirates star Monnapule Saleng, if he manages to win the Nedbank Cup.

"It's a very difficult one because when you look at Player of the season, it's a player that has done well throughout all three competitions of the PSL. So, we start with the MTN8, a player that has done very well in the MTN8, is Monnapule Saleng. You come to the league, a player that has done well in the league, you look at the Ronwen Williams that has broken the record in terms of the number of clean sheets. You look at Saleng that gets to double figures in terms of goal scored. I think if I'm not mistaken, he is sitting on 14 goals in all competitions, and these are all PSL competitions, (with) 7 assists with the one that he gave Kermit Erasmus over the weekend. He plays a very crucial role in Orlando Pirates in terms of finishing in a CAF spot. Pirates are still in the Nedbank Cup, is Saleng in the Nedbank Cup, yes. Is he performing for his club, he is performing in his club, so if you look at and then maybe a competition where he did not really dominate is the league, but the rest of the competitions he dominated. He is in two cup finals," he explained.

"Taking nothing away from the other guys, you know? So, for me, Saleng's name needs to be in that conversation. And for me, I'm a big fan of Teboho Mokoena. I love the boy. When I look at him, I think he's a future Bafana Bafana captain, his leadership qualities, the way he carries himself on and off the field, is magnificent. But I still feel if or when Pirates wins the double, Saleng will have two trophies. So, for me, he is my player of the season, but he has got very stiff competition from Ronwen Williams, and Mokoena but because it's the PSL Footballer of the Season, CAF doesn't count. So, it means Sundowns did well in one competition. That's what I'm arguing my point on."
