SuperSport Admit Defeat In Pursuit Of 'Big Three' Target

SuperSport Admit Defeat In Pursuit Of 'Big Three' Target

SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews feels one of the big three clubs will probably get to sign midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa because they cannot afford to bring him on board.

Mthethwa has previously been linked with Kaizer Chiefs, who are understood to be in the market for a player to control the midfield the same way the hard-working midfielder does for Stellenbosch FC.

It appears SuperSport are interested in the player, but have also been realistic. They are fully aware that they might not be able to fork out the big money it would cost to bring him to Gauteng, with the big guns also sniffing around to see if they are able to prize him our from the Winelands.

"I can't afford to take that the big hitters from Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns on the packages that they are on. There are a lot of attractive players that are coming free, but we can't afford their salary packages. I lost TT because I could not match the kind of numbers Kaizer Chiefs offered him. I had to take that on the chin," Matthews told media recently at a SuperSport United event where they confirmed their partnership with Huawei.

"I have to take it on the chin around other players too because, as much as we would all like to sign Mthethwa from Stellenbosch, I don't have a cheque that can be that big to get him. One of the big three is going to get him. I have to fish in a different pond. And the same goes for another half a dozen players that we would love to have at SuperSport, but we are not going to be able to.

That's the job for Gavin (Hunt) and his technical team and our scouts to come up with names that we feel we could blend in. If you look at what we did this season with Grant Margeman, Ricardo Goss, with (Siphesihle) Ndlovu and I think you can count Tyson (Thulani Hlatshwayo)...we have been able to revive all those players. I have been very happy about that and we are going to have to put those rabbits out the hat again. We are on the right track and hopefully we can keep the majority of this team."
