The 35-year-old will see his Paris Saint-Germain contract expire at the end of the season amid reports he will not extend his stay at the club.
He has subsequently been linked with a stunning return to the Blaugrana, who will reportedly do everything possible to re-sign the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner as a free agent after June.
However, the club's financial troubles and LaLiga's strict Financial Fair Play rules might hinder a deal from materialising, with the league's president Javier Tebas calling Messi's potential return "very complicated".
"If you ask me the question today, Messi's return to Barca is very complicated," he said, according to RMC Sport.
"We have to see how that will evolve but several conditions would have to be met, Barça players would have to leave, there would have to be a reduction in wages.
"And then you have to know what salary Messi would have at Barca.

"Barca is not like PSG, which has a gas and money tap which allows it to have a large payroll. As we speak, it's complicated for Messi to return to Barca."
