Free-agent transfers have become more popular in recent seasons, with teams across Europe's strongest leagues believing it to be a smart policy during these trying economic times in a post-pandemic world.
In Germany, Borussia Monchengladbach have confirmed that 25-year-old striker Marcus Thuram will be taking his career elsewhere later this year. The France international looks set for a bigger team, having now represented Les Bleus at two major tournaments. Thuram joined Gladbach in 2019 from French club Guingamp, and has since contributed to 72 goals in 132 appearances across all competitions.
Plenty of movement is expected in England, meanwhile, where clubs such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Leicester City and Manchester City could be preparing to bid farewell to some high-profile players.
For the Blues, French midfielder N'Golo Kante will see his deal at Stamford Bridge expire in June this year amid rumours the experienced EPL star will not be short of suitors if he decides to leave Stamford Bridge. Arsenal have reportedly enquired about the 32-year-old's availability.
Over in Merseyside, Jurgen Klopp has acknowledged that Brazil international Roberto Firmino has told the club he has chosen against renewing his deal at Anfield. Wilfried Zaha, Youri Tielemans and Ilkay Gundogan are the other Premier League-based players on our list whose deals are expiring at the end of this season.
HEre are 10 top footballers who could potentially move for free after June this year:
In Italy, Inter Milan have conceded defeat in their bid to tie centre-back Milan Skriniar down to new terms amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain, with the 28-year-old valued more than any other soon-to-be free agent by Transfermarkt. The data and statistics website believes the Slovakian is worth €60 million (R1.2 billion).
As things stand, Juventus' Adrien Rabiot is also a few months away from becoming a free agent.
Real Madrid's Marco Asensio is also set to become available for free if he does not commit his future to the 14-time UEFA Champions League winners. The 27-year-old has previously indicated he wishes to play more regularly, while head coach Carlo Ancelotti has publicly stated that he hopes the Spain international will still be at the Santiago Bernabeu next season. For now, it is up to the club and player to agree fresh terms.
Finally, in France, all reports appear to suggest Paris Saint-Germain are close to losing Lionel Messi for free in June. The Argentine previously seemed set to continue his career in Paris until rumours claimed that negotiations between the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner and the French giants stalled in recent weeks. The 35-year-old is now heavily tipped to return to boyhood club Barcelona.
