Rooney 'Interested' In Taking Over EPL Side

Rooney 'Interested' In Taking Over EPL Side

Wayne Rooney is reportedly interested in returning to England to take over the managerial reins of a struggling Premier League side.

Messi Makes Shock Contract U-Turn?

Having bid farewell to English football at the end of last season when he left Derby County to cross the Atlantic Ocean and become head coach of DC United in Major League Soccer, Rooney is now keen on making a return to England and becoming the new Southampton manager, according to talkSPORT.

This past weekend, the Saints, who are bottom of the EPL log, fired Nathan Jones after eight games, during which the Welshman managed to secure only one victory, and are now looking to appoint their third manager of the season.

Rooney has managed to stave off relegation in English football before, albeit in the EFL Championship. After retiring from playing, the former Manchester United marksman immediately traded in his football boots for cones and a whistle as he took the over as manager of the Rams during the 2020/21 season.

It was there that the 38-year-old managed to help the team stay up in dramatic fashion on the final day courtesy of a 3-3 draw with Sheffield Wednesday, but he was unable to prevent the Derbyshire side from going down to League One at the end of the 2021/22 season, during which the club was docked 21 points after going into administration.

The Liverpool-born manager would be leaving DC United in the middle of their pre-season if he is appointed as the Saints' new manager, but could face stiff competition for the role, with former international teammates Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard also in contention for the post.

Jesse Marsch has also been tipped to step into the Southampton dugout, mere days after the American was sacked as Leeds United's manager.
