With Lionel Messi's Paris Saint-Germain contract set to expire in six months, the club's president has revealed the latest regarding the Argentine's potential extension.
Mbappe Matches 56-Year-Old World Cup Final Record
The 35-year-old has just captured the illustrious 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy after Argentina's penalty shootout win over France, adding football's biggest prize to what is already a trophy-laden career.
The diminutive superstar will now return to PSG having added to his cabinet but also to a timely contract situation.
Messi has been surrounded by much transfer speculation in recent weeks as his current deal nears its expiry date. Many clubs will be alert to the Argentine's contract situation, but perhaps no other team will be as determined to secure his future his current side.
Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of the reigning Ligue 1 champions, has openly expressed his club's intention to keep their talisman and now, as per La Gazzetta dello Sport, he has given a time frame for when negotiations with the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner will take place.
"Kylian has just signed a new contract, and Leo's lasts at least until the end of the season," he said.
"Both, but in reality all of our players, are happy to play for PSG. Their most recent performances prove it, even before the World Cup.
"PSG have not lost a single match so far. And the women's PSG, as usual, is doing very well.
"No decision on Messi's contract will be made until next year. Club and player will do what is right and in the best interests of both parties.
"We are all very happy right now, which is great."
