France talisman Kylian Mbappe equalled a 56-year-old FIFA World Cup finals record during his nation's defeat to Argentina on Sunday.
Messi Makes Decision On Argentina Future After Winning World Cup
After the Albiceleste had taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the tie, Mbappe scored two crucial goals for the two-time world champions late in normal time to help his side claw back level with the South American giants, before dispatching a spot-kick in extra-time to force penalties.
Although Argentina went on to lift the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy, the 23-year-old etched his name in history by becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in a final in 56 years, as per Opta Sports.
The last man to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final was Geoff Hurst, when his three goals at Wembley Stadium helped secure England a famous 4-2 final victory over West Germany in 1966.
The Paris native also became the most prolific player in the history of World Cup finals, having scored in France's 2018 triumph over Croatia as well to take his tally to four goals.
The France superstar first found the back of the net from the penalty spot in the 80th minute, before levelling the game 95 seconds later with an emphatic volley. His third also came from the spot to once again bring his side level in extra-time.
