Downs To Make A Call On Key Players' Futures

Downs To Make A Call On Key Players' Futures

Mamelodi Sundowns will have some decisions to make on the future of quite a number of players, but there are a few who stand a good chance of staying beyond the end of this season.

One of the players Sundowns appear to be interested in holding onto is Kenyan defender Brian Onyango, who will see his contract with the club coming to an end in June 2023. The former Maritzburg United and Santos defender has an option to extend in his contract and, at 28, the club appears to feel that he still has a lot to offer going forward.

Onyango's physique and experience gained over the years is said to be valuable for Sundowns, who want to make sure they have enough depth in their squad for the CAF Champions League. Also, with injuries to the likes of Mosa Lebusa and Grant Kekana in recent times, having a player like Onyango gives Sundowns options in defence. Onyango has recently been nursing an injury but was playing regularly early on in the campaign.

The 28-year-old, who joined Sundowns in 2020 after spending some time without a club, has made seven appearances in all competitions. He has not played since September.

Sundowns, meanwhile, are also believed to be looking at the possibility of exercising the option in Surprise Ralani's contract. The player joined Sundowns on an 18-month contract in January from Cape Town City and, despite struggling early on in the season for game, the appointment of Rulani Mokwena as head coach has given him renewed hope in the team. This could see the player getting his option exercised by the end of the season.
