Benzema Misses Late Penalty As Real Drop First Points

Karim Benzema missed a late penalty as Real Madrid's perfect start to the LaLiga season was ended by ten-man Osasuna on Sunday night.

Result: Real Madrid 1-1 Osasuna

Date: 02 October 2022

Venue: Santiago Bernabeu

Los Blancos coach Carlo Ancelotti brought in four changes from the Madrid derby win, with Andriy Lunin coming for Thibaut Courtois between the sticks, while Karim Benzema, Antonio Rudiger and Dani Ceballos.

The early stages of the encounter proved to be a cagey affair, with neither side having any joy in the respective final third inside the opening 15 minutes.

The game's first real opening arrived in the 17th minute when Dani Carvajal's cross found Ferland Mendy who rose above Benzema, but he was unable to steer the header on target.

Ancelotti's charges went even closer on 39 minutes when Sergio Herrera's was knocked into the path of Vinicius who picked out Benzema in the box, but the Frenchman's volley sailed inches wide.

Los Blancos would get their reward two minutes later, with Vinicius finding the back of the net with a cross that evaded everyone in the box and sailed into the far corner.

However, Osasuna were back on level terms five minutes after the halftime break when Unai Garcia sent a cross into the box, where Kike Garcia was on hand to head home.

Ancelotti responded with a double change on 53 minutes as Ceballos and Aurélien Tchouameni made way for Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde in midfield.

Los Blancos threw bodies in search of a second goal and they awarded a penalty in the 79th minute when David Garcia was sent off for bringing down Benzema in the box.

The French striker stepped up to take responsibility but his spot-kick was tipped over the crossbar by Herrera to keep Osasuna in the encounter.

The defending Spanish champions were camped in the Osasuna half in the latter stages of the stanza, but the visitors - who were a man down - managed to hold out until the final whistle.
