Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been urged to retire from football by a former professional player who has been highly critical of the five-time Ballon d'Or winner in recent years.
Portuguese Press Turn On Ronaldo?
Ex-Italy forward Antonio Cassano has not hidden his feelings about Ronaldo of late, having previously revealed the Portugal international once sent him a text message ordering the Italian to stop talking about him.
Following A Selecao's 1-0 loss to Spain in the UEFA Nations League this week, Cassano once again used the opportunity to tear into Ronaldo, whom he believes should hang up his boots sooner rather than later.
"At this point, Cristiano should do himself a favour and understand that if you don't reach a certain level, you should close the shop," he told Cabine Desportiva.
"He won everything, he was a phenomenon. Stop! You have to stop or you'll only run into the bench."
Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes in Portugal's defeat to Luis Enrique's side on Tuesday night, squandering a number of good chances to put his team ahead before Alvaro Morata clinched all three points for Spain with a late strike.
