LaLiga Star Honours Spain Call-Up, Snubs Ghana In Process

LaLiga Star Honours Spain Call-Up, Snubs Ghana In Process

After much speculation about his international future, one of LaLiga's brightest starlets has decided to accept a call-up to Spain and snub the opportunity to play for Ghana.

African Star To Miss World Cup After Doping Ban?

Nico Williams is one of two debutants for the Spanish national team after being called up by Luis Enrique last Friday. The winger has reported for camp for the three-time European champions' upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Switzerland and Portugal.

Speaking to the federation's media, the young attacker did not hold back his excitement at being a part of La Furia Roja's latest squad ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

"I'm very happy to be here, I found out when the call came out," he said upon his arrival at the Spanish camp, as per Marca.

"I had no idea that I was in the preliminary list, it has been a joy for my whole family and I am going to perform here.

"My feet on the ground, I want to work, for the coach to see me. I thank him for this opportunity and I'm going to give my best on the pitch.'

Williams' inclusion in the latest Spain squad means he will not be joining his Athletic Bilbao teammate and brother Inaki Williams in the Ghana national team.

Reports from the west African country had claimed the Ghana Football Association was also keen on recruiting the 20-year-old, but administrative issues seemingly prevented the Black Stars from being able to select the Basque-born star in time.

When Spain head coach Enrique was asked if he selected Williams in order to ensure he is not able to play for the four-time Africa Cup of Nations winners, the 52-year-old responded emphatically.

Gabriel Jesus Responds To Brazil Snub

"I'm not doing this to stop him going with Ghana; he's young and a very interesting player," the tactician said, as quoted by GhanaWeb.

"He's playing more often with Athletic [Bilbao] now. He's progressing wonderfully. I like him enormously.

"We've had him in the junior squad and have been following him for a long time."
