SuperSport Denied Second Spot By Late Swallows Show

SuperSport Denied Second Spot By Late Swallows Show

SuperSport United were denied the chance to move second on the DStv Premiership table after drawing with Swallows FC, who got a late equaliser.

Result: SuperSport United 1-1 Swallows FC

Date: 30 October 2022

Venue: Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium

SuperSport made two changes to the side that beat Stellenbosch, as Kegan Johannes and Grant Margeman were recalled, while Yagan Sasman took the place of Wandile Letlabika in the Swallows line-up.

Margeman had the first clear chance for Gavin Hunt's charges on 22 minutes after going through on goal but his attempted lob was thwarted by goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa in a one-on-one.

SuperSport were eventually awarded a penalty two minutes later after Sasman brought down Thamsanqa Gabuza in the box, but Bradley Grobler slipped in front of his spot-kick and had a miscued shot horribly wide.

The game opened up as the first stanza wore on but neither side could create clear goal-scoring opportunity and went to the break deadlocked.

Matsatsantsa imposed themselves on Swallows early in the second stanza and Thulani Hlantshway broke the deadlock for United ten minutes in with a close-range header after Mbanjwa could not hold onto the initial header by Thatayaone Ditlhokwe.

The Birds looked to get their foothold in the game and Musa Nyatama made a tactical change on 67 minutes, as Siyabonga Khumalo replaced Mwape Musonda.

With the game on the edge, Hunt also made an attacking change in the closing stages as Aubrey Ngoma replaced Jamie Webber.

SuperSport did not give Swallows space as they pressed them high and the visitors lacked numbers upfront when they had chances on counter-attacks.

However, Khumalo was unfortunate not to level matters for Nyatama's men in the last two minutes with a first-time shot from outside the box that rattled the far post, with goalkeeper Ricardo Goss well beaten.

Lindokuhle Mtshali eventually snatched the equaliser for the Birds in stoppage time with a low curling strike on the edge of the box after a return pass from Gregory Damons.

SuperSport leapfrogged Kaizer Chiefs into third spot on the log with a superior goal difference while Swallows moved two points clear of the relegation zone.
