Stellies had been monitoring the progress of the 27-year-old for some time and, despite being linked to clubs in Gauteng previously such as Kaizer Chiefs, the player penned a deal with the Western Cape club.
Barns was a key component in the Richards Bay side last season, making 35 appearances in all competitions. He scored six goals and assisted seven times as the club survived relegation via the end of season playoffs.
"We are delighted to welcome Sanele to the club," Stellenbosch CEO Rob Benadie said.
