Junior 'Aghahowa' Khanye has offered some advice to Kaizer Chiefs after their loss in the Soweto derby and Nedbank Cup exit.
Chiefs suffered a 2-1 loss against Orlando Pirates on Saturday to see their hopes of winning a trophy this season end.
While Amakhosi have been signing players to strengthen the squad in recent months, Khanye believes that the club hasn't been getting the right players to compliment their playing style.
The Good
"As the head coach of Orlando Pirates, Jose Riveiro deserves some credit. I was impressed with the on some of the decisions he made against Kaizer Chiefs. For example, when he introduced Sandile Mthethwa, I was asking myself as to what the coach aimed to achieve. The boy did well and scored the winner. The fact that he didn't track back to defend after the ball had gone out, he was so courageous. The coach deserves credit for anticipating that a moment like that would happen and he introduced Mthethwa. Also, for playing Paseka Mako on the right while he uses a left foot is another thing that should be applauded. Mako dealt with Ashley Du Preez properly. Mako is a properly developed player and he is clever," said Khanye.
The Bad
"If Chiefs had brought back Farouk Khan when I suggested it, he was going to help restore the club's identity. He was going to work closely with the coach and that would have helped the team. Farouk did well with the team in the past and I was there. Farouk and Muhsin didn't struggle to identify suitable players for Chiefs. That's why the team had the likes of Jabu Mahlangu, Nhlanhla Kubheka, Itumeleng Khune, myself, Isaac Mabotsa, Justice Sithole and more. Now Chiefs is buying players that can perform anywhere else but not at Chiefs. For example, Lebogang Manyama won the Player of the Season elsewhere but he struggled at Chiefs. There were so much expectation but he didn't perform at the level he was expected to. Siphelele Ntshangase performed well at his previous clubs but he didn't at Chiefs. There are many others. Austin Dube is struggling to even make the 18 at Chiefs yet he was a top performer at Richards Bay FC. Sibusiso Mabiliso was performing at AmaZulu and he struggled at Chiefs. Brandon Peterson is struggling to even keep clean sheets at Chiefs. Signing free agents is not going to be a solution. I spent two years with the Chiefs senior side and I don't know the club that much. There are people like Doctor Khumalo and Thabo Mooki who know the club very well. Those are the people that should be brought back to the club to help. Taking short cuts is not going to work," he said.
The Ugly
"I have spoken about Chiefs before and people swore at me when all I was trying to do was to advise. When the current head coach took over, I knew that he was going to struggle. I knew that buying players would not be a solution. Most of the players that they should have signed went to Sundowns and they are contracted. I'm talking about Sipho Mbule, Teboho Mokoena, Ronwen Williams, Lesedi Kapinga and Sphelele Mkhulise. They should also try and sign Andile Jali now that he is likely to become a free agent," Khanye added.
Glory Days Can Still Come Back At Chiefs
"Chiefs need to identify players like Jabu Mahlangu, Scara Ngobese and Shoes Moshoeu. Those guys were entertainers and were also good at scoring goals. They were able to create something out of nothing and Chiefs need those kind of players. South Africa is full of talented players but because there is no proper assessment at an early age, the players don't get noticed," concluded Khanye.
