Soweto Derby: 4 Key Clashes To Look Out For

With the Soweto Derby looming, both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates boast players who can light up the occasion. In light of this, Soccer Laduma takes a look at four key clashes that could determine the outcome of the match.

Saleng Vs Hlanti

Sifiso Hlanti has the bragging rights of having silenced Liverpool sensation Mohamed Salah while on duty for Bafana Bafana in 2019 – but will he be able to do the same against Monnapule Saleng? The Pirates attacker has been in the form of his life this campaign and will be keen to continue that form against Chiefs on Saturday. He was relatively quiet in the first fixture between the two teams, with Arthur Zwane managing to nullify his threat, however, his recent form could suggest that Hlanti and Chiefs are in for a long afternoon at the FNB Stadium.

Lorch Vs Ngezana

Thembinkosi Lorch has played two matches since his return from a long injury layoff and so far, has shown no signs of rust. In fact, the former PSL Player of the Season has been what looks to be the missing piece of the puzzle for coach Jose Riveiro's side. However, he will be coming up against Siyabonga Ngezana, who according to his coach, is one of the best defender's in 1V1 situations. The defender has been restored to the Chiefs starting XI due to a spate of injuries, however, he has been known to make high-profile errors in big games.

Dolly Vs Maela

The battle of the captains. The Amakhosi skipper has been blowing hot and cold this season. On his day, Dolly is unstoppable; however, his personal form of late has been indicative of that of the club. Mainly deployed on the right side of the Chiefs attack, the 30-year-old will come up against Pirates captain Maela, who has been restored to left back under their Spanish coach. It will be interesting to see whether Riveiro deploys a back four or if 'Deco' will play more inverted to allow someone like Paseka Mako to take up a left wingback role.

Shabalala Vs Timm

Chiefs starlet Mduduzi Shabalala is brimming with confidence as he is set to take place in his first-ever Soweto Derby on Saturday. He managed to find the back of the net in Chiefs' last outing, and he will be hoping to replicate that feat in one of the biggest games in the country. But he will have his work cut out in the middle of the park as he comes up against the experience of Miguel Timm. The midfielder has established himself as a key cog in Pirates midfield with his composure and excellent reading of the game.
