Spain Captures Inaugural U.S. Soccer eSeries Crown

Spain managed to defeat the U.S. in the final of the first-ever U.S. Soccer eSeries One event which was broadcasted this past weekend. The tournament saw four international teams take part in a series of matches all played on EA Sport's FIFA 20.

The four teams were the U.S., Mexico, Brazil and Spain with each team having three representatives, one from each of their Men's, Women's and Esport's national teams.

New York City FC and US Men's National Team goalkeeper Sean Johnson, US Women's National Team defender Allie Long and two-time eMLS League Series champion Fiddle of FC Cincinnati made up the US representation in the tournament, with the three other competitors — Mexico, Spain and Brazil — all sending a similar trio of men's, women's and pro gaming representatives.

MLS was further represented by Inter Miami star Rodolfo Pizarro, who played for Mexico as the men's national team player, joining La Tri youth international Yanin Madrid and pro-gamer VillaMore3. Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal represented for Spain on the men's side alongside women's international forward Sheila Garcia and FIFA pro, JRA. Finally, Brazil was represented by three-time World Cup veteran Beatriz, as well as Everton Ribeiro — one of the stars of Flamengo's 2019 Copa Libertadores win — and pro-gamer Resende.

During the tournament, each competed in the round-robin style tournament. Players from each national team faced their counterparts, and the three scores were aggregated to determine the winner of the match.

After the dust settled it was the U.S. versus Spain what turned out to be a rather one-sided final. In the final, JRA overcame Fiddle, 3 goals to 1, Carvajal defeated Johnson, 7 goals to 3 and the undefeated Long and Garcia fought to a 2-2 draw, this led to Spain's 12-6 aggregate win.

Spain earned some revenge after the US struck for a pair of last-minute goals to win 8-6 giving La Furia Roja their first eSeries One defeat.

The tournament, which was recorded last week, was played in '85 Overall' mode. This mode gives all players on the virtual teams the same 85 (out of 100) rating, rather than their assigned FIFA 20 rating to assist with making sure the teams are balanced. The Men's National team and Esport National Team players played as their nation's in-game men's national team, while Women's National team players played as their nation's in-game women's national team.

During the competition, viewers on Twitch were able to donate to charities personally selected by the players.
