The story
A squad of South African gamers are heading to the FIFAe World Cup for Rocket League in Saudi Arabia, having qualified for the global eSports spectacle through a local event.
Set to begin on Friday, 5 December, the team earned their spot by winning a national tournament hosted by Telkom's VS Gaming in early October.
The squad consists of Joshua "Sweaty" Kleyhans, Nicholas "cpZebra" Fourie, David "2die4" Moergenrood, and team captain Gareth "Snowyy" Spiers, all representing the renowned Limitless Gaming team.
With a wealth of international experience, they dominated the national tournament to secure their place in the prestigious event.
The team will compete against top global nations in Group A, which includes Spain, host country Saudi Arabia, England, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and more, as they aim to reach the knockout rounds.
This marks the third South African gaming team to compete at the global level, following the FIFA23 team's 26th-place finish last year and the top 4 finish of the Football Manager team in Liverpool this July.
"SAFA Gaming is focused on creating opportunities in eSports for football fans within the FIFA ecosystem. Our partnership with Telkom VS Gaming expands our reach among the youth and ensures ongoing competition in football-related gaming titles," said SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao, who added:
"This helps grow youth participation in SAFA competitions." To stay updated on the team's journey at the FIFAe World Cup, follow fifa.gg and all of SAFA's social media platforms.
