Both Soweto giants have made great strides to improve their respective teams with new additions, while Mamelodi Sundowns have unveiled two new players.
It appears that it is not only in terms of the playing personnel where the Buccaneers have strengthened their side - with two additional technical team members spotted at the Pirates pre-season camp in Rustenburg.
Junior Bhengu, a man who is no stranger to Pirates having coached in the club's junior ranks before, appears to have joined coach Jose Riveiro's technical team ahead of the new season, although it is unclear what his role entails.
Meanwhile, an unidentified fitness coach has seemingly joined Miguel Bellver and Percy Moloi in the Bucs conditioning department.
Another new face appearing in Bucs colours for the first time is young sensation Azola Matrose. He was signed from Chippa United last season but spent the campaign on loan with the Chilli Boys.
It remains to be seen whether he will remain part of Pirates' plans or be loaned out for a further season, although Bucs coach Jose Riveiro has shown he is not afraid to throw youngsters in the deep end.
Pirates are expected to make their way to Spain in the coming days to further their preparations. They will take on Maccabi Tel Aviv, Independiente da Valle and UD Las Palmas respectively.
