According to Siya sources, SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns have engaged in early talks over striker Etiosa Ighodaro. The Nigerian international has joined Matsatsantsa on loan for the 2023/24 season from the Brazilians following an impressive spell at Chippa United during the previous campaign, in which he finished the club's top scorer.
It's understood SuperSport could engage Downs further to keep the forward as their plan until such a time he can be registered as a permanent resident, freeing up a foreign spot in future.
The Brazilians signed Ighodaro from Abuja College in his native Nigeria two years ago and allowed him to adjust to the Premier Soccer League by sending him to University of Pretoria in the second tier, which is now referred to as the Motsepe Foundation Championship – that too was a loan option.
The 22-year-old then joined Chippa United and even as the side battled relegation in the DStv Premiership, his goals helped the Chilli Boys survive the chop. Ighodaro found the back of the net 10 times in 24 league games, triggering interest from Young Africans in Tanzania.
But Downs have opted to strike an agreement with their Tshwane rivals instead, where they can now closely monitor his improvement. As things stand, Ighodaro will still need two more years contracted to a PSL club before he is eligible to be registered as a local.
It's understood Sundowns see him as a future prospect, but so do SuperSport, who are keen to open talks to keep the marksman beyond the current season.
