In what will come as the biggest shock to many South Africans, an Egyptian online publication reports that Mamelodi Sundowns Sporting Director, Flemming Berg, has been talking to Patrice Carteron.
Berg is currently in Europe and, according to online publication Kora Plus, he had a lengthy chat with Carteron and it might have been an innocent meeting between two acquaintances who were just catching up.
It might also have been a discussion about the weather, bees and birds, but in the world of football, this is probably going to be interpreted as meaning one thing only, that perhaps the Frenchman might be coming down to take charge at Chloorkop, as hinted by said publication.
This publication quoted the former TP Mazembe, Al Ahly, Zamalek and Raja Casablanca coach expressing his desire to work in the South African Premiership, which is described as the most commercially successful on the continent.
But the latest developments will come as a huge shock to Sundowns supporters considering that Rulani Mokwena has just won them their sixth championship in a row with seven games to spare by a whooping 16-point lead over runners-up Orlando Pirates.
Mokwena, who was also voted Coach of the Season, was widely quoted saying, "I will be here next season. The club will make an announcement soon. I love this club," while hinting that negotiations to extend his contract have been ongoing… or concluded!
It is not clear at this stage whether Berg's reported discussion with Carteron is an attempt to beef up the technical team with the aim of going for the CAF Champions League following their heart-breaking elimination by Wydad Casablanca in the semi-finals last month.
There has been a massive shake-up in that department since Berg took over as Sporting Director, with Mokwena appointed head coach, while Steve Komphela became his assistant and Manqoba Mngqithi moving to senior coach.
Mathias Zangenberg was appointed Head of Physical Performance and Michael Loftman as Set-piece Coach, while former Sporting Lisbon's Paulo Cardoso was appointed Director of Youth Development and the club parted company with both Joel "Fire" Masilela and Isaac Shai, who were working in the development structures.
