Word reaching the Siya crew is that Mamelodi Sundowns are contemplating holding onto goalkeeper Jody February next season.
This comes on the back of discussions behind the scenes that the Brazilians could be giving veteran keeper Kennedy Mweene the greenlight to chase his dream of completing his coaching qualifications. It would then leave the club with three goal minders – Ronwen Williams, Denis Onyango and Reyaad Pieterse – from the squad that was registered on the domestic front and CAF Champions League last season.
Downs always want to have four goalies on their books for continental competitions, and Mweene was one of them when they reached the semifinals in May, although he did not feature at all. February spent the last six months of the 2022/23 season on loan at AmaZulu FC, where he impressed and there was even talk Usuthu would attempt to make the transfer a permanent one from July 1.
Soccer Laduma also reported in last week's edition that the player has attracted the attention of topflight returnees Cape Town Spurs. As things stand, the Siya crew understands Downs prefer February returns to Chloorkop to be an understudy to Williams, Onyango and Pieterse with the side set to compete in six different tournaments.
The Carling Black Label Knockout will be an additional cup competition next season and makes for a congested schedule alongside the DStv Premiership, MTN8, Nedbank Cup and the CAF Champions League… and the African Super League said to be commencing in October.
The Chloorkop-based outfit want enough cover and this is where talks around February staying have emanated from, but it remains to be seen whether this will be the final call as the player wants regular game-time.
What's the best option right now for February's career?
