Orlando Pirates have seemingly missed out on the services of Ashley Cupido, who has emerged as one of the sought-after players since the 2022/23 season ended. The lanky marksman finished the Motsepe Foundation Championship campaign as the league's leading goal scorer, with 15 goals from 29 matches.
He has been a key man for Cape Town Spurs in their pursuit of promotion to the DStv Premiership through the ongoing relegation/ promotion play-offs, although his participation in the matches came to an abrupt end after he was showed a red card against Casric Stars last Wednesday.
As previously reported by the Siya crew, Bucs, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns have all been interested in the forward. However, indications are that SuperSport United could be the 22-year-old's destination in the coming weeks after the Tshwane side reportedly made a good offer for his services.
"Pirates is one of the clubs that have been interested in Ashley Cupido, but it doesn't look like he will be joining the club," said a source. "The club (Pirates) was willing to pay R3 million for the player's services, but it looks like Cape Town Spurs wanted more andnow he is likely to sign elsewhere. SuperSport United is the club that is likely to win the race for the player's services and is willing to pay more," the source added.
If secured, Cupido could become a suitable replacement for another big centre forward Thamsanqa Gabuza, who seems to be headed out the exit door.
How much of a blow is this to Orlando Pirates?
