Can Pirates Afford Pitso?

Can Pirates Afford Pitso?

As revealed by the Siya crew, Orlando Pirates are reportedly considering Pitso Mosimane as a potential replacement for departing head coach Jose Riveiro.

The speculation surrounding Riveiro's future has now been confirmed, with the Soweto giants officially announcing that the Spanish mentor will be leaving at the end of the season.

Last month, uncertainty loomed over Riveiro's tenure as there was no official word from the club regarding his future.

However, Pirates have now put all speculation to rest, confirming his departure. In an official statement on Thursday, the club's chairman, Irvin Khoza, expressed his gratitude for Riveiro's contributions, stating:

"While we would have liked José to extend his stay with us, at the same time, we fully respect his decision. We are grateful for everything he has done for the club."

With Riveiro's exit now a certainty, attention has turned to potential successors, and Mosimane's name has emerged as a strong contender.

Can Pirates Afford Mosimane?

One of the key considerations in hiring Mosimane is the financial aspect. The highly regarded coach has spent the past few years working with top clubs in cash-rich leagues worldwide, including his most recent stint at Esteghlal FC in Iran.

His international success has made him one of the most expensive coaches in South African football.

Moreover, Mosimane is known for bringing his own team of technical staff wherever he goes, which further increases the financial commitment required to secure his services.

In recent years, local clubs have reportedly been reluctant to pursue Mosimane, fearing the high costs associated with hiring him and his backroom staff.

Despite the financial challenge, Orlando Pirates are believed to be one of the few PSL clubs capable of affording a coach of Mosimane's calibre.

His experience, tactical acumen, and winning mentality make him a highly attractive option for a club looking to dominate both domestically and on the continental stage.

Furthermore, sources close to the coach suggest that Mosimane is keen on returning home after his successful spells abroad.

The 60-year-old is understood to be open to adjusting his salary expectations to align with South African market standards, making a potential deal with Pirates more feasible.

While there is still no official confirmation from Pirates regarding their interest in Mosimane, the possibility of bringing him on board is an exciting prospect for the club's supporters.

If the Buccaneers can meet his financial demands and secure his services, it could signal a new era of success for the club under one of Africa's most accomplished coaches.

"He (Mosimane) fits the criteria for a club of Pirates' magnitude, and that's without a doubt. His achievements speak for itself. Yes, a coach like him doesn't come cheap but this is Pirates we are talking about – a big club. Can they afford him? Yes, I believe so," said the source.
