Sundowns To Run Down South American's Contract?

Sundowns To Run Down South American's Contract?

With no offers confirmed for Bolivia international player Erwin Saavedra, Mamelodi Sundowns are understood to be holding onto their midfielder.

Siya sources close to the club have indicated that the R18m worth player may not be in coach Rulani Mokwena's plans but that he will probably only leave when his contract ends in June 2024.

The source added that this may be the way forward due to the high cost of a potential transfer of the player and Saavedra is currently going through rehabilitation in Bolivia

"For now he is going through rehabilitation and no team can take him on at this moment," said the Siya source.

"Yes, there were teams interested in him but they could not engage him due to the injury. But now the club has decided that they will keep him until the end of his contract to avoid the cost of paying him out for the remainder of the contract," the source told the Siya crew.

A different source added that although the club has a two-year option on him, Sundowns are not expected to act on that option.

"They will not exercise the two-year option when his initial two-year contract expires in June 2024. So, they are waiting on his expiry and then they can part ways," said the Siya source.

"It's an unfortunate situation in which both the club and the player find themselves in. He came with high hopes but little has been achieved and the club has reached that decision now to part ways when his contract expires next year in June," the source told the Siya crew.

Soccer Laduma contacted Sundowns for a comment but received no response while preparing this story.
