Insider: What Is Mngqithi's Mandate?

With Manqoba Mngqithi hard at work and focused on leading Mamelodi Sundowns to success in the 2024/25 season, the coach's mandate at the defending champions seems to have been revealed.

Last week, it was revealed by the Siya crew that the highly respected coach has put pen to paper on a new contract with the Brazilians.

The tactician's agent – the esteemed Mike Makaab from Prosport International – confirmed the deal saying that the reigning African Football League champions will make an announcement about the new deal in due course.

While the representative didn't disclose the details pertaining to the length of the deal, close sources indicated that the long-serving coach, who has won over 10 trophies as part of the technical team at Downs over the years, is believed to have penned a four-year contract.

With the new deal in place and the coach aiming to lead the Brazilians all the way in the MTN8 after a good start with a victory in the opening round, insiders have discussed what the mentor's mandate is at the PSL giants.

The CAF Champions League is a target for the Chloorkop outfit, while doing well in all the other competitions remains an expectation this season, as was the case under Rulani Mokwena in the previous campaign.

"But what does Mamelodi Sundowns want to achieve as a football club? Don't they want only the best? Don't they want to win the Champions League? So, it's not even a question of what the mandate is for the coach, but what the club wants. The coach also wants to achieve success, and so are the people he is working with it, and therefore the goal is the same (as it was with Mokwena). The mandate is to win the biggest of them all (the Champions League)," said the source.

"He (Mngqithi) has got the support of everyone, from the management, technical team and the players. Sundowns are a great club that is very professional and with everyone supporting each other, and therefore he is not on his own. Everyone is behind the coach as the team will be going all out to do well in all the competitions domestically and on the continent and the (FIFA) Club World Cup later on," the source added.

Soccer Laduma contacted Sundowns for comment but the club had not responded by the time this report was published.
