Lesedi Kapinga is set for an uphill battle in his attempts to leave Mamelodi Sundowns before the transfer window, due to open on 1 July, slams shut, the Siya crew has been told. The midfielder has asked to part ways with the club to revive his career elsewhere seeing that game-time has been so limited at Chloorkop, but it's reported that Downs want to use him in a player trade.
It's no secret that Kapinga, who signed for the Brazilians from Black Leopards at the beginning of the 2020/21 season just months before then coach Pitso Mosimane quit to join Al Ahly, has been wanting to leave. Despite Sundowns competing on all fronts during the previous campaign with the MTN8, DStv Premiership, Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League, it came as a shock to Kapinga's camp that he was overlooked. He only made six appearances.
In January, the player asked head coach Rhulani Mokwena to be released or loaned out, but it is understood there was simply not enough time to get a deal over the line during the four-week transfer window. Now, the Siya crew has been informed that Kapinga and his representative have become despondent over the possibility of getting the midfielder his clearance in the coming weeks.
The Brazilians are in advanced talks with Stellenbosch FC to sign talisman Junior Mendieta and could use Kapinga as part of a cash deal, while likely to do the same in other negotiations for their targets before the new season in August.
