Insider: Chiefs' First Choice Is Pitso, But...

Kaizer Chief insiders privy to information at the club have indicated that Amakhosi have already started looking at who could take over the head coach reigns on a full-time basis.

After parting ways with former head coach Molefi Ntseki, Chiefs announced their Head of Academy, Cavin Johnson as their interim head coach of the first team on Monday.

The club has since started the process of identifying a permanent replacement.

Insiders at the club have revealed that the Amakhosi have identified their first choice, that being Pitso Mosimane. The highly respected coach, however is currently coaching Al Wahda in the UAE and landing his signature holds its own challenges.

This is not the first time Amakhosi have shown an interest in Mosimane as Soccer Laduma have reported on the link before, while the former Al Ahly head coach had denied rumours of a Chiefs approach in the past. At that time he was coaching Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia.

Nevertheless, the Siya crew understands Chiefs have not given up hope of attracting Mosimane this time, who's credited for transforming Mamelodi Sundowns into one of Africa's strongest teams, winning the Caf Champions League with them in 2016 and then the domestic treble before leaving for Egypt.

"Kaizer Chiefs are seriously considering Pitso (Mosimane) at this moment. Yes, they are aware of the complications as he is currently attached to another team," said the Siya source.

"And to make matters worse it's (Al Wahda) not in the country. It's outside. I can't say how the management and board are working on that but they are seriously considering him, that much I can tell you.

"They have discussed it and they are convinced he would be the one to change the fortunes at the club for the better. They are looking at his contract at his current team and to see what could happen from there," the source told Soccer Laduma.

One of Chiefs' biggest challenges would be to attract Mosimane when he would be on a lucrative salary being based in the UAE. The former Bafana Bafana coach is also admired in North Africa, so any PSL club will have to compete with the financial strength of the richest clubs on the continent too.

According to reports, Mosimane was on a salary of R2.5 million per month at Al Ahli and he's expected to be earning in that region at Al Wahda. Chiefs' top earning coaches have historically cashed in on either side of R10 million, so you could expect Chiefs to break the bank if they are to sit at the negotiating table.

On the other hand, he could also be attracted by a long term vision of strengthening the Chiefs team in a similar direction he had achieved at Sundowns, and to be known as the coach who could bring back the glory days at Amakhosi.

The only question when it comes to Mosimane transforming the squad is that Chiefs' management are known to have an influence on transfers and how the first team is run, and it remains to be seen how the head coach could uniquely be given the carte blanche  that he is known to have.

A second source stated that the relationship between the current interim head coach Johnson and Mosimane could be a driving factor in convincing him to join.

"They have a very good understanding. They worked together at Al Ahly in Egypt and they did very well. Maybe it's him who even brought up that idea. We are not sure. But for now coach Pitso is the first priority they are looking at," said the other Siya source.

"They want a coach who understands the local game and has achieved things locally and abroad as well. But we all know it won't be easy but this is football my brother you can't say never," the source added.
