Fresh from winning the 2022/23 CAF Champions League title with Al Ahly, Percy Tau is understood to be in for a new deal at the Egyptian giants, the Siya crew has been informed. There was fear that the speed merchant's stint at the side would be cut short after injury ravaged the first few months of his stay in North Africa.
This publication understands there were concerns within the club's corridors that the Witbank-born star had carried a chronic injury and that their investment had resulted to nothing after he was brought in by then coach Pitso Mosimane in a multimillion-rand deal in 2021.
However, patience appears to have paid off for the Red Eagles as Tau emerged as a pivotal part of coach Marcel Kohler's outfit, particularly in the Champions League, where he played a starring role. The 29-yearold managed an impressive five goals and five assists in 12 appearances as Al Ahly marched to their 11th title in the continental competition.
Now, the latest news as incoming from Siya sources is that the club is keen on handing the Bafana Bafana international a new and improved contract, with his current deal set to expire in June 2024.
"The management and coach want to offer a new contract to Tau," a well-placed source revealed.
In recent comments while with the national team prior to last weekend's Afcon qualifier against Morocco, Tau told the media that he was content at Al Ahly for now, although he would jump at the opportunity to return to Europe if it presented itself.
"Whenever I'm playing well, there'll always be talks around that, but if the opportunity comes, I'll always take it to go back to Europe. But I'm still okay at Ahly," he said.
Should Tau return to Europe instead of staying in Africa?
